BIKING BY THE SEA

This cross-country adventure will explore the beautiful rugged mountainous Island of Karpathos. You will be introduced to the local traditions and culture, taste the delightful cuisine and delight in the amazing, breath-taking views that will surprise you at every turn.

ITINERY

DAY 1

After everybody has arrived and checked in to the hotel we gather at the Anemos restaurant, where over a welcome drink we introduce you to the team, and brief everybody on the weeks program.

DAY 2

The day starts with a hearty breakfast followed by the fitting and allocation of the bikes to each participant. Backpacks are packed and we start of on the first tour which is a circular route around the southern region of the island. The tour passes through 2 villages and amazing views over the neighboring island of Kasos can be enjoyed. Towards the end of the trip we stop for a refreshing swim and a tasty lunch.

Trip details; 42km with an overall elevation gain of 700m

There is still plenty of time for relaxing on the beach or trying one of the various activities around the center before gathering for dinner and drinks.

DAY 3

This day is an absolute visual delight, after being transported to the village of Spoa , where we visit one of the few ancient windmills which are still operational, we head south along the beautiful east coast. We pass through the beautiful village of Aperi and then head inland on agricultural roads through olive groves and finish the trip at the center.

After some resting and relaxation we gather at the center where we will take a trip into the town for dinner, shopping and drinks.

Trip details; 37.5km with an overall elevation gain of 700m

DAY 4

Today is free of any tours, so you can take the opportunity to try some windsurfing, mountain-climbing or bouldering, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful location.

We gather again at about 18.00 to be transported to a traditional taverna to enjoy an amazing dinner over the most spectacular sunset.

DAY 5

After enjoying breakfast we head up to Othos, the highest village of the island, here we visit a traditional home, we then head to the village of Piles where we visit the folklore museum. The trail then takes us through some pine forest and winds down to the west coast of the island. We then take the coastal road southwards and head to beautiful beach and traditional taverna for some refreshment. It is then a short ride back to the center.

Trip details; 45km and overall elevation gain of 870m.

In the evening we gather for a BBQ followed by some live music to end off a great day.

DAY 6

Take the opportunity of the free morning to sleep late or to improve on your windsurfing or climbing techniques.

We gather again at 17.00 to enjoy a relaxed tour to the village of Arkasa where we enjoy some drinks over the amazing sunset. We then return to the center along the southern coast where a delicious dinner will be enjoyed.

Trip details; 22.5km with a total elevation gain of 290m

DAY 7

The last tour of the week starts with an amazing boat trip up to the village of Diafani. We then cycle up to the famous village of Olympos which is best described as a living museum. The tour continuous southwards along the backbone of the islands mountains, at the village of Spoa we take the western coastal route and feast on the spectacular views and breath in the thyme, and pine flavored air. We stop in the fishing village of Finiki for some traditional “meze”( Greek tapas ) to replenish our reserves for the final ride home.

Trip details; 65km with a total elevation gain of 1200m

We enjoy our last dinner in a restaurant which combines gourmet with tradition to delight your culinary senses.

DAY 8

Departure day.

 

TRIP DETAILS

TECHNICAL SKILLS AND LEVEL OF FITNESS

Participants should have ample experience on riding mountain bikes on different terrains. Terrain on this tour varies from Asphalt to seldom used agricultural roads which are rocky and have loose gravel. Sharp changes in gradient should be expected and participants should be comfortable in adapting to these changes in trail conditions. Participants should be reasonably fit, cycling at least twice a week and be able to cycle for up to 5 hours at a leisurely pace on consecutive days. Steep continuous climbs with elevation gains of up to 500m will be encountered and participants should be comfortable with this.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU.

  • A backpack of at least 15 liters with a hydration bladder
  • Your technical bike wear and at least one windbreaker
  • We provide Scott helmets but feel free to bring your own
  • Your cycling shoes and if you prefer your own spd pedals.
  • Swim wear and sun screen protection
  • Biking Sunglasses
  • Gloves

FOOD AND BEVERAGE

Breakfasts will all be taken at the Anemos restaurant at the ION CLUB Center. All group lunches and dinners will be taken at carefully chosen restaurants and tavernas to allow participants to experience the delights of the Greek and traditional Karpathian cuisine.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

All participants will be met on arrival and transferred to the ION CLUB Center and to the Thalassa-suites. On the departure date the participants will be picked up from the Thalassa-suites and transferred to the airport.
